Bed bugs are not picky when it comes to invading living spaces. They will choose wherever is most convenient to have a steady supply of food. Their food, unfortunately, is human blood.
Hotels and apartment buildings are particularly susceptible to bed bug infestations since everyone is in such close quarters. Bed bugs travel by hitchhiking on our clothes, shoes, bags or whatever they can hang on to. Because of this method of travel, they are more easily transferred when people live in close proximity to one another.
Hotels
Hotels are a special case of having not only close quarters to deal with, but a steadily changing flow of new guests. Bed bugs do not prefer one level of sanitation over another. They just want to be near people to consume their blood. They enjoy hiding in cracks and crevices near a food source i.e. a sleeping human (hence their name).
Bed bugs are excellent at hiding. They are so good, in fact, that it can be difficult even for experts to find them. When an inspection is needed, bed bug detection dogs are called in to use their highly trained noses. Bed bug detection dogs, when trained properly can boast much higher accuracy levels than humans. Their noses are built for it, while our eyes have to strain to see the tiny bugs.
Apartments
Bed bug infestations in apartments are also increasingly common. The bugs are most often found within a few feet of their food source, which is generally a sleeping human. However, they will hitchhike readily and make their way into nearby apartments if given the chance.
Fortunately, American Pest has tips for how to check for bed bugs when traveling and plenty of options for property managers and tenants in apartments if a bed bug infestation is to strike.
