The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its second "Bug Barometer" of the year. This infographic was designed to warn people of the pest activity that is to be expected throughout the United States. For your convenience, we are taking this opportunity to further discuss what our clients in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia should expect during these chilly seasons.
The warm and rainy weather that Maryland and D.C., residents experienced this past summer is expected to bring an increase in stink bug and ladybug activity. Both of these common fall pests are known for invading homes to stay warm as temperatures drop. While they aren't exactly dangerous, they are a nuisance and get increasingly aggravating as more begin to infest your home. Along with increased activity in those nuisance pests, the tick, a potentially dangerous pest is also expected to have large populations throughout the area. This is likely connected to the increased populations we saw at the beginning of spring and summer. While their activity will decrease as temperatures drop, they can easily get into your home thanks to the rodents that sneak indoors during the winter.
The best option for homeowners to avoid these pests is to carefully inspect your property for entry points. Stink bugs and ladybugs will easily get indoors through a small crack in your foundation, under doors, or a hole in a window screen. While Virginia is technically considered to be in the Southeast region of the US, it is a good idea to see what type of activity they are expecting as well. If you aren't sure what to look for or want to be sure that you are protected from pests, contact American Pest for an inspection!
With Virginia being in the southeast region of the US there is a good chance that mosquito activity isn't over just yet. The flash floods, hurricanes, and tropical storms that hit the region throughout the summer provided these annoying pests with numerous breeding grounds to choose from. It is important to check your home and yard for any standing water that could act as a breeding ground and dump it out at least once a week. Believe it or not, we've discovered mosquitoes breeding in water in pots and plants inside homes! Trust us, you don't want mosquitoes breeding in your house! But wait, mosquitoes aren't the only ones that enjoy the warm wet conditions, termites and ants do too! So be sure to keep an eye out for these pests and protect your home from an infestation.
While Maryland and D.C. are considered to be in the Northeast region of the U.S., they are still very close and it wouldn't be a surprise for Virginia residents to see similar activity. With that being said, you should also inspect your home for cracks and entry points which will also help protect you from ants. If you want to be sure that your protected this fall and winter, contact American Pest, request an inspection, and ask about the pest-free pledge.
