What are Ladybird Beetles?

Ladybird beetles belong to the order Coleoptera and are also commonly referred to as ladybugs. An adult ladybird beetle is oval, convex and is typically red in color with 6 black spots on each wing. They have small heads that are turned downward, short legs and their hemispheric body is about the size of 1/2 of a pea. They are predators and feed mainly on plant-eating insects.

Why do I have them?

Ladybird beetles overwinter in the adult stage and often are found clustered together in large amounts. They want to hibernate in a warm, comfortable spot over the cold months of winter and gather in groups when they hibernate, so if you see one, you can be sure more will follow.  You may also notice a rise in ladybugs in the spring as they prepare to move back outdoors for the summer months.

Are they dangerous?

Ladybird beetles are not poisonous to humans. However, they can have toxic effects on some animals. Ladybugs have a foul odor which deters some predators from eating them and their bright colors also help as a deterrent. They are considered more of a nuisance for homes and businesses and not a threat.

How can I prevent this in the future?

Ladybird beetles are attracted to the light colored houses and older homes tend to experience more ladybird beetle problems due to lack of adequate insulation. The beetles tend to come in through small cracks around windows, door ways and under clap boards. Proper insulation and sealing of potential openings may help to deter these pests.
