When mice get into your home, it can leave you scratching your head, wondering how they did it, especially if you've taken the time to do a detailed inspection of your exterior and worked hard to seal entry points. But mice have abilities that help them get into homes. Some of those abilities might surprise you. Here are three things you need to know about mice in Maryland.
Most mice are able to jump a foot into the air. They can jump an even greater distance horizontally. They can also climb most vertical surfaces. So it should not be surprising that a mouse has found its way into your home. They can climb trees and jump down onto your roof from tree branches. They can work their way up through the downspout of your gutter system. If you live in a brick home, they can scale your walls. They can climb vegetation... This is why mice often infest attic spaces.
You would think that a mouse would need a pretty big hole to get into your home. But this is not the case. A mouse has the ability to compact its organs to allow its body to squeeze through very small holes. In fact, most mice can get through a hole the size of a dime. If you looked for "mouse-sized" holes in your exterior, you may want to go back out and do an inspection for holes you would not expect a mouse to get through. Since mice are expert climbers and great jumpers, you'll want to look low and high for these tiny entry points.
If you did an exterior inspection a few days ago and patched up all your holes, you may be surprised to hear mice in your walls or inside your ventilation ducts. Sadly, mice can chew their way through weatherstripping, door and window frames, seals around frames, water-damaged wood, flimsy plastic covers on vents, seals around roof penetrations, and more. If you didn't have a hole yesterday, you could have a hole today. That is the unique nature of a mouse infestation. You can put in all the work necessary to keep mice out and still get an infestation.
