June 6th has been declared World Pest Day in an effort of raising awareness about the importance of pest management for all home and business owners. On this day we join many in sharing the importance that the pest management industry plays in protecting health, food, property, and the environment from pest threats all around the world.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has joined forces with the Chinese Pest Control Association (CPCA), the Federation of Asian & Oceania Pest Managers Association (FAOPMA), and the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations (CEPA) in support of this event.

Why is Pest Management Important?

Pest control is a factor that every homeowner should consider for a variety of reasons. Pests are attracted to all types of homes, no matter how clean they are. Believe it or not, pests pose a real threat to your home and loved ones and should be dealt with accordingly. This is why pest control is important:

  • Health Threats

Some of the most common pests, including cockroaches, rodents, mosquitoes, and ticks are capable of transferring a multitude of diseases on to people. Rodents can carry Hantavirus, which can be fatal to humans. Ticks carry Lyme disease, along with a variety of other diseases. Mosquitoes carry illnesses including the West Nile Virus and the Zika Virus. Roaches are known to cause allergies when there is an infestation, especially in children.
  • Food Contamination

It is common for pests to infest homes and contaminate food that has been left out or stored improperly. Rodents and cockroaches find their way inside cereal boxes and other food containers in residential homes. You truly couldn't imagine how much businesses in the food service industry would suffer without pest control. When a building has that much food, it's near impossible to keep pests out without a uniquely designed pest control plan.
  • Property Safety

Many homeowners across the world are aware of the damage pests may cause to their property. Termites, Carpenter Ants, and other wood-destroying insects are good at sneaking into a home and causing plenty of expensive damage before a person even notices. Along with wood-destroying insects, there's a multitude of pests who can damage fibers like carpet beetles, silverfish, and the Indian meal moth. However, thanks to the pest control industry, professionals all over the world are protecting homes, and find new ways to prevent these pests from damaging your personal property.

On top of the importance of your health, food, and property, the pest management industry continues to evolve and bring homeowners, renters, and business owners peace of mind. After all, a pest free home is a happy home. If you or someone you know is in need of pest control, contact us today.
