Learn how to spot a termite infestation: Check
Most likely your list of to-do’s for spring reads a bit different and does not reference termites in any way, shape or form. But, here’s the thing. If you do not know how to identify the signs of termites, you may be at risk for a termite infestation in your home. Not capable of inflicting harm to humans (does stress count?), your home is another story. In fact, a termite problem could lead to extensive and costly repair bills. So, what do you need to know? The termite control pros at American Pest are ready to give you the upper hand when it comes to spotting termites in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.
Termite Swarms
Termite swarms are an indication that termites are present on your property or somewhere close by and should put you on high alert. Termite swarms are an alarming display of nature that occurs in the springtime each year. A colony produces hundreds and even thousands of swarming termites; these are not the same as the wood destroying workers. Swarming termites, often referred to as “swarmers”, are created for the purpose of reproduction and forming new colonies. When the ground becomes warmer and softer, the swarmers are released from the colony and they take a brief flight in an attempt to find a mate and move on to form a new colony. But it’s not long until the wings fall off which can cause a pretty big mess if it happens to be inside or nearby your home. Although swarmers themselves will not cause any damages, they are a sure sign that a colony is close to your home.
Identifying A Termite Infestation
If you have witnessed a termite swarm, or even if you have not, you should also be aware of other common signs of a termite infestation. Here are a few clues to keep your eye out for:
Mud tunnels. Used by termites to make their way from below ground, across exposed terrain to a food source, mud tunnels may be up to 300 feet away from the colony and are composed of dirt and possibly droppings. They are a clear sign that termites are cruising around your property.
Termite damage. Perhaps the most well-known sign of termites are the destroyed, rotten, or weakened wood resulting from their handiwork. Warped doors and sagging floors are just a couple of examples of termite damage at its finest.
Termites are not a pest that should be left un-treated. By doing so you run the risk of letting these destructive insects inflict significant damage to your home. If you notice any of the signs mentioned above, contact a MD pest control company immediately.
