Those of us with pets know about the dangers of heartworms. Heartworms are most commonly associated with our dogs but are known to infect cats, wolves, and other mammals.
What are heartworms? And who do they affect?
Heartworms are parasitic worms that reside in the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and major arteries of their hosts. They cause what is known as Heartworm Disease which can potentially be fatal to our pets if not properly prevented or treated. Heartworms do not work alone; here is how the mosquito comes in. An adult female heartworm discharges her young into the blood stream of the host. A mosquito bites the infected host animal and then becomes infected itself. The mosquito then bites an unaffected animal, where heartworm disease is transferred and developed. Without the mosquito, the larvae cannot mature into adult female and male worms. Female heartworms can grow as long as 10-12 inches whereas males are generally shorter and grow to be about 4-6 inches.
Prevention
Prevention is better in terms of health and ease compared to treatment after an adored pet is infected. Fortunately there are a quite a few prevention methods to choose from making it easier for your pet to avoid infection. There are chewables and tablets that are to be consumed daily or monthly. Topical treatments and injections that are applied on an appropriate schedule are very useful as well. Talk to your vet about the prevention method that makes the most sense for you and your pet.
Here Is How We Can Help!
Mosquitoes are attracted to short cut grasses and plants, bushes, shrubs, and bodies of water such as bird baths and puddles. American Pest offers a Residential Mosquito Mitigation service in which our trained technician will identify potential breeding areas of mosquitoes by inspecting the around your home. As part of our “STAR” treatment, Residential Pest Control, an American Pest representative will discuss treatment options with you to determine what works best for your individual situation. Appropriate treatment will be applied to the affected areas to help eliminate the existence of the mosquitoes that reside in your yard, protecting your family and pets from these pests.
