Mice are so cute with those little noses that twitch and cute little pink feet. Some people even have mice as pets. They love watching them as they run around in their wheel, over and over again. Can’t you just picture little Gus Gus, from the story Cinderella. How adorable was he with his chubby belly and charming smile. When he tries to carry that stack of triangular shaped cheese, he is just too cute! ‘Real’ (wild) mice that enter your home uninvited can be extremely dangerous to you, your home and your family. They come in looking for shelter, food, water, and warmth. Your home provides all of this and more for a desperate mouse, but they can damage your home and make you sick.
One important fact about mice is that they like to gnaw on things to sharpen their teeth. Your electrical wires, if chewed, can spark a fire and create a lot of damage that can be very costly. They also are known to carry diseases, and when they leave their droppings around your home, that can be very dangerous for humans and pets. You will want to prevent them from entering your home by blocking all points of entry. You need to fill in all cracks, holes, crevices, and gaps. Some mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime, so you will want to be thorough. Inspect outside vents, chimneys, walls, and window and door frames and seal all of these points of entry. Investigate basements and attics as well, replacing or fixing all vent screens and frames that are damaged. Even then, you will want to clean up food spills right away and perhaps put out traps. However, poisonous traps can be dangerous around your home. Sticky bait traps may catch a few mice, but they breed so quickly that you will never get ahead of the problem. Traps that you put cheese or peanut butter on that snap on the mouse when he eats can be stressful. These traps sometimes catch them, but not kill them. Besides, these traps will only catch a few of the numerous mice that live in your home. You can also keep all piles of wood, brush, and other clutter away from your home. Keeping the mice that like to live in them further away may prevent them from finding a way in.
