In the United States, we have a tradition of declaring days, weeks, and months as important times to reflect. If you have a heart for abused children, April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. If you love gardening, then you'll want to observe National Garden Month. Every month has a long list of National observances. They stand as a reminder of what is important. We would like to tell you about one that is important to us.
For 30 years, the pest industry has been observing National Pest Management Month. It was established with two important goals in mind.

It is a reminder that our job is to manage pests. Bugs and wildlife serve a purpose. In nature, they help to turn fallen trees into fertile soil. They aerate that soil so that vegetation can grow lush and colorful. Some bugs feed on plant-damaging bugs and are helpful to gardeners and farmers. Some creatures feed on poisonous creatures and keep us safer. There are many ways that bugs and wildlife, when properly managed, are beneficial to us. The goal of the pest industry is to protect public health and property through the effective management of pest creatures.

It is a reminder to home and business owners that it is important to manage bugs and wildlife. When these creatures get into man-made structures they can do harm. Termites, carpenter ants, wood borers, carpenter bees, and other wood-damaging pests cause structural damage that can lead to financial stress and personal injury. Cockroaches, rodents, flies and other dirty creatures spread harmful bacteria, allergens, and diseases. Mosquitoes are vectors for West Nile virus and Zika virus, which can have serious symptoms. Ticks have the potential to infect humans and pets with Lyme disease, a disease that can have lifelong medical implications. Silverfish, clothing moths, and other bugs that chew on cellulose can damage belongings. Stinging insects send more than a half million people to the emergency room every single year.
April is when many pests are becoming active again because it is when most states are transitioning from winter to spring. Take a moment to think about the many ways bugs and wildlife can be a threat to your business and your family, as we take time to remember that our job is to manage these creatures in a way that makes the natural ecosystem strong and beautiful, without allowing them to pose a threat to health and property.
