American Pest Sponsors 1st Annual Swinetastic!

American Pest was a sponsor at the first annual Swinetastic BBQ Festival at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, Maryland last Friday and Saturday. The event hosted barbecue competitions featuring teams from all over the country. Proceeds benefitted the American Cancer Society.

Some Swinetastic visitors were perplexed to see a pest control company hosting a booth at a barbecue event, but American Pest soon showed the patrons that passed their booth that they had plenty of good reasons to be there.

To keep with the BBQ theme, American Pest actually held a cooking demonstration of its own. Two unique dishes were prepared with a special secret ingredient: Insects! Employees prepared Crunchy Cricket Croquettes and Squirm Worm Surprise (featuring mealworms!) to show visitors that insects can be a healthy part of an adventurous diet.

The American Pest booth also offered giveaways including commemorative Koozies, Nationals tickets and an “insect-themed” BBQ set put together by the company’s own John Stroheker, Technical Assistant. A special appearance was also made by the American Pest Lab’s “famous” Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and “infamous” bed bugs. Visitors had an opportunity to touch and hold the cockroaches and look at the bed bugs that were kept tightly sealed in their container. The allure of handling an exotic insect like the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and the fear of seeing live bed bugs without risk of taking one home proved to be intriguing reasons to stop by American’s exhibit in between barbecue tasting and listening to live music.

Miranda Sherman, Marketing Manager for American Pest, was pleased with the success of the company’s appearance at Swinetastic.

“Swinetastic was certainly a unique kind of event that we haven’t had an opportunity to participate in until now,” said Sherman. “We’re always looking for interesting ways to be involved with the community and branch out.”

Visitors could also take pictures of each other in cardboard cutouts of a cockroach and a butterfly.

Employees that manned the booth or visited included Paul Bergmann, Jen Blondo, Alicia Gautille, Randy Levine, Matt Nixon, Kevin Poland, Krys Rackley, Miranda Sherman, Ben Snyder, Trisha Wareham and Terp, the newest Bed Bug Detection K9.
