American Pest entomologist Kathy Heinsohn, Ph.D., B.C.E., will present in depth pest control information at the Food Safety Summit in Washington DC on Tuesday, April 17. Dr. Kathy will address pest control issues specific to the food industry to teach about Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The extensive summit is “designed to meet the educational and information needs of the food industry including growers, processors, retailers, distributors, foodservice operators, regulators and academia,” according to the Food Safety Summit.
IPM is a combined approach to pest control. In practice, it prevents pests from entering a property, resolves pest activity already present inside, and monitors any activity for future deterrence. “An insect is only a pest when it comes inside,” says Dr. Kathy, “My job is to teach people to keep them out for good.”
Specifically, Dr. Kathy’s talk is designed to teach methods to eliminate conditions conducive to a pest infestation. The summit presentation will teach “pest management practices from exclusionary measures to sanitation and everything in between,” according to the Food Safety Summit. Dr. Kathy’s segment will educate those in attendance with a combination of common pest practices and insights that come from her twenty plus years of pest control experience.
Facility practices like cleanliness are paired with IPM to battle uncontrollable elements that may bring pests. “You can’t choose your neighbors, but you can do as much as you can to solve issues on your own property so that your products and brand stay protected,” says Dr. Kathy.

I love to teach,” says Heinsohn, who is affectionately known as Dr. K around the American Pest office.
