Will Those Winter Mice Leave Now That It Is Warming Up?

Pretty soon it will be time to throw off your winter coat and hat and start spending more time outside in the fresh springtime air. The birds will be singing, the trees will be budding, and the animals will be waking from a winter of hiding. And pests that have been living in your attic and wall voids will pack up all their stuff and move back outside to their summertime nests, right? We wish that were the case but it isn't.

Just because the weather is warming up and mice will soon discover that temperatures are pleasant outside, does not mean that they will move out. They have worked hard to establish themselves in your home. They know their way through your walls and into kitchen and pantry areas. They have all the food and water sources they need. Why would they move out?

Problems Mice Cause When They Get Into Houses

  • When mice get into homes, they do not come alone. They carry all sorts of illness-causing bacteria and parasites and they also cause damage to homes and belongings.

  • Mice are rodents and rodents chew. Rodents need to gnaw on things constantly in order to wear down their teeth. They will chew holes through wood and plastic and will disturb insulation and stored belongings. They will even chew on electrical wires, which can spark a fire.

  • Mice carry bacteria. They will forage in filthy places and then walk around on food prep surfaces and leave their excrement and urine everywhere they go. This can cause illness and flu-like symptoms in humans.

  • Mice can spread diseases. Among the worst is hantavirus, which can lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a dangerous respiratory condition that can be fatal. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, chills, abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

  • Mice carry parasites. Among these are fleas, mites, and ticks. Each brings its own set of problems into your home. Humans can be exposed to Lyme disease through ticks. And pets may develop tapeworms, cat scratch disease and flea allergy dermatitis if exposed to fleas.

Why DIY Methods Of Mice Removal Often Fail

While there are many strategies home and business owners can take to get rid of mice with DIY methods, these efforts often fail to completely rid a structure of these pernicious rodents. Mice will go into hiding when threatened and you may think you got them all, only to find out later that they are still lurking in your walls--and multiplying. If you need to completely rid your home of mice, reach out to American Pest. Those little disease-carrying rodents are not going to move out of your home for the summer or any other time of year.
