June 4-10 is 2017 Bed Bug Awareness Week. In honor of this, we are taking a look at where these pesky critters love to hang out. Do you know all of the places where bed bugs love to live and breed?
Bed bugs are one of the most annoying pests, and also one of the most difficult to eradicate. Because of their small size (adults are just ¼ inch in length), they tend to gather in very small spaces. They are reddish-brown in color, and a flat, oval shape. For comparison, they are about the size and shape of an apple seed. So, where exactly are bed bugs hiding?
Anywhere on a mattress. Under, on top, and especially around the seams and buttons.
Behind anything hanging on the wall. This includes picture frames, posters, and clocks.
In electrical outlets, behind switch plates, and even in electrical appliances.
In the corners of the ceiling.
Inside drawers, especially in the corners.
Anywhere on curtains.
Within bedding and other linens.
Behind headboards, baseboards, and even wallpaper.
In the corners of any desks, chairs, or tables.
Within the carpet.
This list will be especially helpful if you are staying in a hotel room or Airbnb, and have concerns about bed bugs. Since these insects are known hitchhikers, just one needs to latch onto your luggage for an infestation to occur in your own home. An infestation will grow fast too, as females can lay up to 7 eggs per day, totaling almost 250 eggs in her life time. As the baby females mature and begin to lay their own eggs, they will do the same. It is estimated that just one pregnant female is capable of creating an infestation of more than 5,000 bed bugs within just six months.
If you are in an area where a known bed bug outbreak has taken place, it is especially important for you to check any and everything you bring into your home. This includes furniture, clothing, and even library books. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of a bed bug infestation, look no further than the experts here at American Pest.
