Ticks

If we’re being technical, deer ticks are actually blacklegged ticks and actually an arachnid. Yes, like spiders. Deer ticks in Maryland are kind of a big deal. It’s not so much that their size or stature is intimidating. In fact, they’re rather small. The reason for our concern lies more in their bite. Read on to learn more about deer ticks in Maryland.

What makes this pest a concern in Maryland and the eastern half of the U.S. is their close association with Lyme disease. This disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick. According to the CDC, there were 801 confirmed cases of Lyme in Maryland in 2013, last year’s statistics have not been documented to date.

It’s important to remember, not all ticks have Lyme disease. If you discover a tick on your person, take a deep breath and then focus on removing the tick. Visit http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/removal/index.html for more information on how to safely remove a tick.

If a tick has bitten you, you’ll want to pay close attention and call your doctor right away if you observe any of the following symptoms:

  • Rash (at the site of the bite)

  • Fatigue

  • Chills

  • Fever

  • Headache,

  • Muscle and joint aches

  • Swollen lymp nodes

Symptoms may become worse several days or weeks after the tick bite. Treatment is necessary for Lyme and should be administered in the early stages of the disease. If you have any reason to suspect you’ve been bitten by a tick (even if you don’t see a bite or a rash) reach out to your medical provider right away.
