What makes this pest a concern in Maryland and the eastern half of the U.S. is their close association with Lyme disease. This disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick. According to the CDC, there were 801 confirmed cases of Lyme in Maryland in 2013, last year’s statistics have not been documented to date.
