What Bugs Are Overwintering In Your Home?

General Pest Control

Your home is a safe haven for you from the chilly winter weather. Hunkering down in your home during a winter storm is a luxury that we can all appreciate, but did you know that you might not be alone? Overwintering pests may also be seeking protection from the winter weather inside your home and you could be playing host to many more pests than you realize!

Bugs found in homes in the winter include:

Flies: The house fly is looking for a place to breed and live and it is also looking for a source of food. They will eat decaying vegetation, garbage, fresh fruits and veggies, fermenting liquids and meat. They are known for contaminating food and spreading diseases throughout your home.

Ladybird beetles: Also called ladybugs, these little beetles are about ½ the size of a pea and are typically red or orange with black spots. They enter homes in the fall and cluster together in large numbers and they become dormant during the winter months. On warm and sunny winter or spring days, they will revive themselves and move in masses to your sunny windows and doors.

Stink bugs: These pests are approximately 17 mm long and they are dark brown and shield shaped; when startled or crushed, these insects let off a ‘stinky’ odor. They look for a way into your home in the fall months; once inside they become dormant. Stink bugs will not bite you or reproduce inside your home during the winter months, but on warm and sunny days they will come out of hiding and make their way to the nearest sunny window. When you have a lot of stink bugs in your home, an infestation of these pests can be very frustrating.

Cave crickets: Also called camel crickets, they are a large species of cricket (approx ¾ of an inch to 1 ½ inches long) and they are humpbacked, wingless crickets with very long antennae. If you are hearing cricket noises, you do not have cave crickets, as these crickets do not chirp. They can often be found in damp basements.

Clover mites: These are little red bugs that are close relatives of ticks and spiders; they are considered true mites. They are extremely small and very hard to see, but when they enter in large numbers they can be quite a nuisance. They cannot bite and are not harmful to humans or pets but they may leave a tell-tale red stain when smashed. They are often attracted to the sunniest side of your home or foundation.

Although most of these pests are simply nuisance pests, if you have them in your home you understand how frustrating they can be.
