As things warm up here in Maryland and D.C., the insects begin to come alive and reproduce. Some of the most noticeable bugs to be aware of are stinging insects. The number of bees, wasps, and hornets are rapidly increasing this summer which means that the chances of stings have increased as well. This may be nothing more than a nuisance to some, but to those that have an adverse reaction to the venom of stinging insects; it can be a serious occurrence. In fact, it has been reported that over a half million people visit emergency rooms each year due to ‘bee’ stings. The majority of these are from people who have an allergy to the venom; but anyone can be adversely affected by a sting when multiple stings occur all at once.
Hornets, yellow jackets, and wasps have smooth stingers and can all sting multiple times which poses an even greater risk of injury. Hornets and yellow jackets, in particular, are extremely aggressive creatures and will attack in number in order to protect a member of the colony from threats, whether they are real or simply perceived. They certainly have a “you mess with one, you mess with us all” type of mentality. It doesn’t even matter that you didn’t intend to disturb their nest; they do not care about your intention. These grumpy members of the stinging world are better left alone if you want to avoid their painful wrath.
When dealing with the realms of stinging insects, it is important to note that nests can come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in a variety of places. The paper wasp, for example, likes to build its nest in a conical shape under window sills or in the eaves of buildings. Hornets also prefer covered areas for their paper nests such as: house eaves and overhangs or tree branches. Yellow jackets can commonly be found nesting in the ground. They particularly like to use old rodent burrows and will expand these dens as their colony grows. Stinging insects have even been known to nest inside telephone poles! With the wide variety of locations that can house these sometimes dangerous creatures, it is important to be diligent and stay aware of your surroundings.
When you do discover a nest in close proximity to your home or business, it is not a good idea to take matters into your own hands.
