Are you seeing little chew marks on the edges of some of your baseboard corners? How about squirrels scampering around on your roof and then disappearing? Maybe you are having trouble with flu-like illnesses, when it is nowhere near flu season! All of these things may be signs that you have rodents in your home. Read on to learn about common rodents that will invade homes and the signs to look for.
Tiny droppings in drawers, cabinets, or other places. Mice always leave these little presents behind to let you know they're around.
Little teeth marks and possibly shavings where the mice have chewed. Rodent's teeth never stop growing, therefore rodents never stop chewing.
Odors of mouse urine. This distinct odor is used by mice to communicate with other rodents. The more mice you have, the worse the odor will become.
Burrows or tunnels. Mice love to burrow into insulation or other materials to build nests in dark places. Usually, there will be lots of droppings in these areas.
Scratching or scampering noises inside your walls.
Sightings of live or dead rats. This is the most obvious sign that you have rats!
Rat droppings left in various places along baseboards, inside cabinets, etc.
Grease or dirt marks along walls and floorboards.
Rat runs. These are tracks rats leave behind through grass and low vegetation--paths that the rats use over and over.
Rat nests. For roof rats, these can sometimes be found inside your lofts, attics, beneath floorboards, or in other dark, secluded places.
Large rough teeth marks. Rats, like mice, chew constantly and will leave chew marks behind.
Noises in the attic. Squirrels are known for making lots of noise, usually in the morning or evening.
The odor of urine seeping into the house, or the smell of a dead squirrel. This sometimes happens if a squirrel gets trapped inside a wall void or other area.
A hole chewed through your roof area. Being rodents, squirrels chew, and sometimes that chewing will bring them right into your home.
Squirrel droppings. These are generally ⅜ to ½ an inch long, oblong in shape, and rounded at both ends.
Squirrel tracks. Powdery substances will show a track that looks similar to the skeleton outline of a human hand if a squirrel walks through it.
Big, messy, loosely constructed nests made of twigs, leaves, bark and vines in your attic means you probably have a squirrel.
Rodents are not something to take lightly. Mice are able to reproduce quickly; rats carry all manner of diseases and parasites; squirrels can chew holes in your attic that will make you lose heat all winter long, and all three can chew on wires and cause a house fire. These are just a few of the things rodents can do in a home.
