Preparing for Autumn Pests

Mice    Stink Bugs

From buzzing insects to sneaky rodents, a pest controller’s schedule doesn't end with the summer. There are a few important things to keep in mind when preparing your home for the fall season.

Rodents
Rodents like mice and rats are a year-long problem when they make their way indoors and find something to eat out of your pantry. However, they tend to become even more of an issue when the weather becomes cooler.

Rodents will happily make a home out of your home with just a few factors that you may be able to reduce.

  • Tightly seal all food, particularly food stored in opened bags and cardboard boxes.
  • Search under sinks, cabinets, the stove, and under the stairs for any potential entry points. If you find any- fill them with steel wool to make it more difficult for mice and rats to enter.

If your house remains as inhospitable as possible to rodents, they are more likely to move on to a better opportunity for food and shelter.

Stink Bugs
Maryland and Virginia are among only a handful of states that have to deal with massive numbers of brown marmorated stink bugs each year. The invasive, typically agricultural pest makes its way into homes and businesses each year when the crops have been harvested and the weather cools.

It is difficult to say with certainty what the severity of the stink bug invasion will be this fall throughout DC, Baltimore, and Alexandria, but there will surely be some resurgence as they make their way indoors for the winter.

American Pest provides a stink bug reduction program to target stink bugs when they are most likely trying to get inside. Give us a call today to learn more about what we can do to help keep your home safe from insects and rodents this fall and all year long!
