What is a Kudzu Bug?

Kudzu bugs are an invasive species from Asia. They were first spotted in Georgia in 2009, and have made their way into Virginia and Maryland. The Maryland Department of Agriculture has recently issued a warning regarding these pests. So far, the bug has been found in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Carroll, Charles, Dorchester, Montgomery, Prince George's, Saint Mary's, and Talbot counties.

Identification

Size: 3.5 to 6 mm long

Color: Olive Green with Brown Speckles

Shape: Round

Defense: Smelly Odor

Where Are They?

Kudzu bugs typically thrive on kudzu vines, which is where almost all of the ones in Maryland have been found. However, they also love soybean plants. The Maryland Department of Agriculture has warned farmers about the potential for Kudzu bugs to ruin soybean crops.

How Do I Get Rid of Kudzu Bugs?

The impact of kudzu bugs will be similar to that of stink bugs in the area. Just as many homeowners experience frustrations over stink bugs finding their way inside, they will likely experience the same situation with kudzu bugs. If you find a kudzu bug in your home and squish it, it may stain surfaces and cause skin irritation. Whenever a kudzu bug is touched, poked, or squished, they emit a nasty odor. Therefore, it is best to vacuum these critters up. It is recommended to place them in hot, soapy water after being vacuumed up .
