Mice Looking For Winter Homes

Home Pest Control

The end of fall means that mice are packing up their bags, moving out of their summer homes and looking for new real-estate. Unfortunately for us, many mice decide to create their winter retreats in our homes. Now, if they were even remotely helpful, and did some dishes, put in a load of laundry, or dusted the living room then they may not be so bad, but mice do none of those things. The reality is that there is nothing positive about having mice living in your home amongst you and your family. The pest control experts at American Pest want to give you some information about mice and provide you with some helpful tips to help you avoid your home from being invaded by mice this fall.

Listed below are some of the many reasons you should act now to prevent mice from being able to get into your home this fall.

  • As mice travel they leave behind paths of urine and piles of feces, they contaminate food prep areas, utensils, plates, and food sources with their excrement.

  • Mice cause a lot of dangerous structural damage inside of homes. They are unaware that chewing through wires can cause house fires, and that chewing through pipes can lead to water damage and mold issues. They can also gnaw through insulation, drywall, and flooring.

  • Mice cause a lot of damage to personal items like clothing, pictures, books, furniture, and boxes that are located in your home

  • Mice don’t just bring themselves into your home; they also bring in parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites. These parasites can cause health concerns for you and your pets.

  • Mice are capable of carrying and transmitting a wide range of diseases that can make you and your family ill. Diseases including Lymphocytic choriomeningitis, Salmonellosis, and the very serious Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

  • Mice emit a musky smell that can make your home smell very unpleasant.

To help prevent problems with rodents in your home, our experts can provide effective prevention and control services through our Rodent Protection Package. This package protects your home from mice by providing an inspection by one of our licensed professionals, the sealing off of all possible entry points, installing a rodent bait station, providing an interior and exterior rodent treatment, along with follow-up inspections and treatments.

In addition to our Rodent Protection Package, we can help to eliminate and control mice year-round through our Preferred Care Programs. You can also help to prevent mice from getting into your home by making some changes around your home. Seal cracks and crevices found in your home's foundation, plug openings found around utility entrances, place pet food into sealed plastic containers, remove dry good from their original packaging and place into sealed plastic or glass containers. It is also very helpful to make sure that outdoor trash cans have tight-fitting lids on them and to place piles of firewood a distance away from the exterior of your home.
