It’s that time of year when each of us loves waking up to blue skies and chirping birds. Picnics, barbecues, and trips to the lake are a huge part of many of our summertime routines. While we are out enjoying these days, so are many insects and pests. Ants are busy doing all of that work that we hear so much about, bees are doing their thing in the gardens, and mosquitoes are just waiting for one of us to forget to wear our repellent.
But, what happens on those rainy days? As it does with people, the rain can have an impact on the relatively unseen world of pests in their natural habitat. There are many different types of insects and other pests that live underground who, in a heavy rain, will quickly get flooded out of their homes and need to evacuate to higher ground and find new shelter. Take the ant, for instance. Ants build a complicated system of tunnels all underground that quickly floods as the ground gets saturated. As it continues to rain, eventually ants will seek shelter elsewhere. Chances are their choice will be a nearby warm and dry building with easy access to food. Rodents will also seek shelter somewhere safe and dry. Mice, rats, even moles seek out safe places when the rain is just too much. Pests like earwigs and springtails, both insects who love dark and damp areas, can also be driven inside if the rains get too heavy. Even though many of these pests enjoy moisture, there is such a thing as too damp.
Some pests seem to thrive in the rainy weather. Insects like mosquitoes breed when it’s wet. These troublesome pests need standing water to lay their eggs in, but it doesn’t take much at all to satisfy this need. After a rain, any standing water will do, puddles, flower pots, bird baths, and clogged gutters make great spots for eggs. The rain also encourages other pests to breed. Pests such as ticks and fleas thrive in warm, humid weather so they breed much quicker during rainy periods resulting in a population explosion for people and their pets to contend with when they venture outside.
All of this means that the rain can be bad news for any attempts at keeping pests out of your home. Insects and rodents need very little encouragement to seek shelter inside your four walls. The tiniest of cracks in the siding, foundation or the spaces where pipes lead in can become highways to many seeking a dryer climate. Once there, any of these pests can quickly set up camp for the long haul since finding food is easy, and there are hidden spots all over your house to nest in and live a relatively peaceful life.
