Ticks

Spring and summer temps cause increased activity in a variety of pests in Germantown and throughout Montgomery County. Ticks have become a major one you want to avoid. May is Lyme disease awareness month and so we want to take a few minutes to pass along some important information on ticks. Tick bites are capable of transmitting many different diseases and infections. Lyme disease is transmitted by deer ticks. These can be identified by their black legs. There are several other diseases or infections caused by ticks. They include:

  • Anaplasmosis

  • Babesiosis

  • Ehrlichiosis

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

  • Southern Tick-associated Rash Illness

  • Tick Borne relapsing Fever

  • Tularemia

  • Colorado Tick Fever

  • Powassan Encephalitis

The increase in Lyme disease alone highlights the danger of these parasites. There are many ways that you can prevent tick bites. Before you go outside keep these tips in mind:

  • Ticks live in moist and humid areas. They love wooded, grassy or overgrown areas. Be sure and dress appropriately if you need to be in these kinds of places!

  • Products such as DEET and permethrin can help repel and kill ticks. DEET can be used every few hours. Permethrins can be sprayed on camping gear, boots and clothes. It can provide protection through several washings.

  • When you come in from the outdoors, you want to be sure and check for ticks.

  • Check your clothing for any unattached ticks. You will want to remove any that you find. You can also place your clothes in the dryer on hot for at least an hour to kill the ticks.

  • Try to shower within two hours of coming inside. This will help wash off any unattached ticks and is a perfect way to do a good check for ticks.

It should be a common practice to thoroughly check for ticks anytime you have been outside. This needs to become a regular habit. Be sure to check yourself and have someone else check you as well. Areas to check well include:

  • In and around ears

  • In your hair

  • Under the arms

  • Back of your knees

  • Between the legs

  • Around your waist

  • Inside your belly button
