Prevention 101
Students across the Maryland, DC and Virginia region are packing up their fall wardrobe and preparing to spend the next nine months away at college. They will ready themselves to make new and lasting friends, though some may be more welcome than others. Bed bugs are like those friends that just don't know when they've over stayed their welcome and continue to be a growing problem in everyday life across the country.
Education is the best weapon against bed bug infestations. It is important to know how to identify a bed bug and what to do if you think you might be dealing with an infestation.
Chapter 1: Identification
Bed bugs are small copper-colored insects that grow to be about 5mm as adults. They are nocturnal insects that feed exclusively on blood. Bed bugs prefer human blood but will also feed on animals if need be. These creepy insects are easily hidden in box springs, bed frames and even the seams of mattresses. They do leave signs of their presence in the form of cast skins and the spotting of their excrement, but in smaller infestations these signs may be overlooked if you don’t know what you are looking for. If you think you might have bed bugs it is best to contact a professional so they can determine the next step.
Chapter 2: Prevention
Since bed bugs can travel so easily in close quarters, remaining vigilant against the threat is your best defense. If you think you may have come in contact with bed bugs, your best course of action is to wash and dry your clothing and bags on the highest temperature possible in order to kill any potential hitchhiking bugs.
Bed bugs are not picky about their environment. They do not have a preference for dirty rooms over clean rooms and their presence does not indicate anything about the sanitation of a certain area.
Chapter 3: Treatment
While bed bugs may be tiny insects, they cause a huge headache that only gets worse with do-it-yourself remedies. From catching your bed on fire to poisoning yourself from chemical misuse, please do not take it upon yourself to try and eradicate the bugs from your home. This is a task best left to professionals with knowledge of products and techniques best suited for each individual case of bed bug infestation.
