Can you hear scratching, scampering, or gnawing noises coming from your walls? Are you finding tiny droppings in the backs of drawers or under your cabinets? Have you noticed holes in your roofline or seen that insulation is disturbed in your attic? If you answer yes to any or all of these questions, then you most likely have rodents living inside your attic and wall voids.
Some facts about rodents:
In the Order Rodentia, there are over 2,000 species, which are subdivided into many families. Some of the most common are Capromyidae, Castoridae, Cricetidae, Erethizontidae, Muridae, Sciuridae and Dipodidae, with Muridae being the largest. In fact, this family contains around ⅔ of all rodent species, including mice and rats.
Mice and rats, and all other rodents, are prolific chewers. They will chew on their food, of course, but they will also chew on just about anything else. They do this because their incisor teeth never stop growing. Now, in the wild, this isn't much of a problem; but in a home, that is another thing altogether. Rodents chew holes in walls, gnaw into insulation or plastic piping, and chew on stored items. They are also known to sever wires in wall voids.
In addition to destroying property with their teeth, rodents are also known to carry all sorts of diseases and illness-causing pathogens. A few of the diseases that rodents are known to transmit include hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, leptospirosis, Omsk hemorrhagic fever, plague, salmonellosis, and rat-bite fever. These are not things you want to fool around with. The symptoms of leptospirosis, which can be spread by eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with the urine or feces of an infected animal, include high fever, headache, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rash. If a person contracts leptospirosis and is not treated, it can lead to a host of health issues including kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
