Are Centipedes Really Dangerous?

Do you know a game called Centipede? We're not talking about the arcade game where you constantly defend yourself against countless computer-generated centipedes. We're talking about a real life game, where no matter what you do, you can't seem to stop these many-legged creatures from getting inside your home.

While it is safe to say that computer-generated pests are not dangerous, can we say the same thing for the real life centipedes? It depends on how you look at it. House Centipedes can be dangerous to people who have an allergic reaction to their sting. However, even if you are not allergic, the venom from a centipede sting can be very painful. Like a bee, a centipede will sting and hang on, which will cause a burning sensation that will slowly grow until it encompasses a spot about 3 inches in diameter. The pain can be excruciating.

So, centipedes are dangerous in some ways, but they are not dangerous in the same way as other pests are. They don't transmit diseases like cockroaches do. They don't destroy your home the way termites do. And they don't have life-threatening venom like black widow spiders do. However, centipedes certainly aren't a creature you want lurking in the shadows of your bathroom.

How Can I Keep Centipedes Out Of My Home? Centipede prevention tips include:

  • Remove attractants from around your home. Dry out areas of moisture around your yard and near your foundation.

  • Remove food sources and keep trash in tightly sealed containers.

  • Seal up gaps and cracks in your foundation and walls.

  • Install or check all weather stripping and door sweeps to make sure they are in good working order.

  • Make sure all screens are present and in good repair.

  • Keep the rooms of your home dry by using fans and/or dehumidifiers.

  • Having ongoing pest control can significantly reduce all pests inside and outside your home, as well as address the issues that make your home and yard attractive to centipedes.

If you don't already have year-round pest control, consider the fact that life is simply better without centipedes causing painful stings--or other pests spreading diseases, destroying your home or belongings, and biting with life threatening venom.
