There is a multitude of pests in the Maryland area that need no introduction. Mosquitoes, ticks, and mice in particular, since we have been living with them and dealing with them our entire lives. The one pest that goes under our radar and ends up getting ignored is the carpet beetle. They can do significant damage to carpets, furniture, furs, fabrics. Occasionally carpet beetle larvae can even cause a skin irritation from their bristles. Common in the Maryland area are furniture carpet beetles, common carpet beetles, and varied carpet beetles.
Adult varied carpet beetles are black with irregular patterns of brown, white, and darkish yellow scales on their wings. They are 3/16 of an inch or less in length. The look a lot like mini ladybugs, but are black with yellow spots. Their larvae look hairy and brown in color. Carpet beetles are fond of stuffed animals, feathers, hair, book bindings, animal skins, fur, and horns, wool, and silk. They can be found mainly under carpets, furniture, and baseboards, but can also be found in closets and on the floor. They get inside your house through tiny cracks and crevices in your homes foundation and exterior walls. In fact, sometimes a carpet beetle population isn't discovered until some are found near windows and doors where they likely enter.
To prevent these pests you will need to inspect all plants and flowers you bring into your home, keep your home clean, and eliminate hair, lint, and debris. Vacuum regularly to remove dead insects from carpets, curtains, and around window sills. Seal off all cracks and crevices they are entering through, fix broken screens and vents, and be sure utility entrances have no gaps. Lastly, keep wool and other fabrics stored in airtight containers.
