Over the past few weeks, there have been a few confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in the area. There have been confirmed cases in Fairfax County, Prince George County, and another resident near Baltimore, Maryland.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito and is not spread from human to human. There has been an increase in infected mosquitoes in the area with them being found earlier and earlier each summer.  

Prevent West Nile Virus

With the increase in incidence in the area, be sure to take precautions with the following tips.

  1. Use a mosquito repellent that contains DEET and apply often when spending time outdoors.
  2. Wear clothing that covers exposed skin. Be sure to continue applying bug spray to those areas as they can bite through clothing.
  3. Avoid being outdoors during dusk and dawn which are their peak biting times.
  4. Remove standing water from your yard regularly.

West Nile Virus Symptoms

West Nile Virus Symptoms are often confused with the flu as they can include any combination of the following and usually only occur 2-14 days after being bitten.

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body Aches
  • Skin Rash
  • Swollen Lymph Glands
