The Fight to Control Zika

Mosquitoes

As we quickly approach summer, lawmakers continue to stall on approving official funding for the Zika virus. To many, the Zika virus is just another ‘one of those diseases’ like SARS, Mad cow disease, Anthrax, Swine flu, Bird flu, Ebola, and the list goes on. But we should consider the idea that maybe these viruses and diseases never reached their true hyped potential because of quick acting and collaboration between medical professionals, policymakers, and the public.

Not everything is known about the disease, but it has been confirmed that Zika can cause a birth defect called microcephaly amongst pregnant women’s unborn children and inflammation of the spinal cord. Zika virus was actually discovered in 1947, but its harmful neurological side effects were not reported in the past few years. One scientist mentioned as Zika expanded to other areas, it has maliciously transformed. Outbreaks occurred in 2007-2013 in Africa and the Pacific Islands, but no instances of neurological symptoms were officially reported until 2013.

Death is a very rare occurrence amongst those that are infected with Zika, and in most cases, those with serious symptoms—if any—may not be inclined to seek medical attention. In Virginia, there are currently 11 cases of Zika virus reported, 8 in Maryland, and 3 in Washington, D.C.

It is important to not get caught up in the fear-mongering and misinformation, however, we should take necessary steps to protect ourselves from mosquito bites to reduce the chances of disease transmission. You can use DEET and other insect repellents for our clothes and skin. Research products the CDC recommends for the best protection.

You can also take protective measures at home by adding plants that repel mosquitos to your landscaping, making sure your yard is free of mosquito breeding zones, and adding a pest control treatment plan to rid mosquitos from hanging out in shady areas near your property and other cool areas around your home.
