If you've lived in this area for any length of time, you know that spring is a time when pests start coming out of the woodwork: Sometimes, quite literally. Flies begin hatching and start to plague you. Ants start marching to and fro on your kitchen floor. Termites become more active (although you're not likely to see this one.); and cockroaches multiply more rapidly as the temperatures rise. These are the common household bugs you'll find in your Montgomery County home. Let's take a look at them.

Flies: These pests are known to be the scavengers of all things that are unclean. Known as "filth" flies, these creatures will first crawl in dumpsters, sewers, cat litter boxes… and then straight onto the ketchup on your French fries, where they will deposit all of that filth they picked up in their travels. A few of the diseases that house flies can carry include conjunctivitis, polio, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, anthrax, leprosy, cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery.

Ants: When the ground thaws and the weather warms up, ants can be seen everywhere looking for food and new nesting grounds. If you are seeing little black or brown ants in your home, these are most likely pavement ants and not too much to worry about, you may also be seeing odorous house ants which will smell like rotten coconuts when you crush them. However, the worst kind of ant to have invading your house is the largest ant species in the area, and these are carpenter ants. The reason they are the worst is because they burrow into the wood of a home creating tunnels and nests to live in. This, over time, can weaken a structure.

Termites: Spring is when termites come out in large numbers from mature colonies. These winged insects, you may see on the outside of foundations or window sills, are called termite swarmers or winged reproductives. However, they are very easy to miss since they will only be out and about for about half an hour before they mate, shed their wings, and disappear again to start a new colony. If you see winged termites or the shed wings they have left behind inside your home, this spells trouble as it indicates a mature colony already inside your walls. It is important to take note that termites are responsible for about $5 billion in prevention and repair costs to U.S. home and business owners each and every year.

Cockroaches: These nasty creatures multiply rapidly in springtime and can enter your home through cracks and crevices in your foundation or walls. Cockroaches are known to carry bacteria such as salmonella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus. They also harbor viruses such as polio.

Mosquitoes: Spring is when the mosquitoes start to bite, and mosquitoes can carry several diseases including viruses such as: West Nile, dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and yellow fever.
