Have you heard the bad news about mosquito season? It is supposed to start earlier, last longer, and be more intense than ever before. That is saying a lot. Mosquitoes already cause headaches for anyone outside, and the thought of the population intensifying is unnerving. Are you prepared? It’s time to beef up your mosquito arsenal. Here is a quick glance at the best forms of mosquito prevention.
There are a few steps you can take to prevent a mosquito invasion in your yard and on your skin. There are natural ways to prevent mosquitoes, such as attracting sparrows to your yard, burning candles, decorating your patio with mosquito-preventing plants, and spraying yourself with an insect repellent.
What you need to remember when you tackle the mosquito problem is that mosquitoes are not confined to your yard. You will continue to be a target regardless of the plants you put outside and the candles you burn. Mosquitoes carry diseases such as Zika virus and West Nile. You must use a repellent to prevent mosquitoes from biting your skin and to prevent transmission of a deadly disease.
When you are shopping for mosquito repellents, don’t be distracted by promises of DIY solutions. There is only one way to prevent mosquitoes when using repellents: the correct ingredients. When shopping for a mosquito repellent, look for these ingredients:
DEET. It is the best and most effective ingredient in any insect repellent. When comparing any other ingredient to DEET, none of the ingredients perform as well or better than DEET.
Picaridin. Picaridin is the second most recommended ingredient by the CDC. The CDC recommends only DEET and Picaridin for effective mosquito repellent.
The most recognizable and popular mosquito repellent is OFF! Deep Woods which is nearly 25% DEET.
Repellent can be found in other items as well. A new item on the market is wearable bug bands. The bracelets claim to prevent mosquitoes, but there is a downside to the bracelets: they are only on one wrist. So, while your wrists won’t have mosquito bites, your neck, face, legs, and arms are still at risk.
DEET only works where it is applied; it doesn’t create a cloud around you to prevent mosquitoes. That is why a spray works best. You will need to spray bug repellent about every 4 hours. More may be necessary if you are in the water or if you sweat often.
DEET is also an excellent ingredient for preventing mosquitoes on your property. It has been approved by the FDA as a safe solution for lawn care and home protection. American Pest's mosquito control program has been developed by board certified entomologist, choosing to enroll in this program will limit your exposure to these dangerous pests.
