Doesn’t it feel so nice to finally have warmer temperatures again? Winter is over and it’s time to look forward to all of the things that warm weather brings…BBQ’s, swimming, and so much more. While we look forward to all of these things, one of the things that we don’t look forward to is the return of stink bugs. While stink bugs are not dangerous, they are an extremely annoying pest and quite a nuisance for homeowners.

What Are Stink Bugs?

You might recognize stink bugs by the triangular shaped plate on their backs. This is why they are commonly referred to as “shield bugs”…it almost looks like they have a knight's shield attached to their back. Stink bugs are usually a variety of shades of brown and are pretty large as far as pests go, usually about one inch in length. Stink bugs come by their name honestly as they have small glands located on their thorax that can emit an unpleasant odor. This smell can be released when vacuumed or squashed. This is especially true when in large numbers. Despite this offensive smell, stink bugs are otherwise harmless to humans. But that doesn’t mean you want them inside your home this spring.

How To Get Rid Of Stink Bugs

To keep these bugs from causing a “stink” in your home, there are a few tips that homeowners can follow to increase the odds of preventing an infestation.  Smaller cracks and crevices should be sealed and other openings should be covered or repaired. Some of the more common entry points include cracks and crevices around any window and door trim, air conditioners, exhaust fans, and chimneys. Stink bugs are drawn to plants and fruit to feed on, so taking this into account is a good idea as well. Try limiting the number of plants in your home and properly store your fruit.
