Are Wolf Spiders In Maryland Dangerous?

With their name alone, Wolf spiders might instill a sense of fear, but the truth is they are not a significant risk to people or pets. Although this is the case, it might be difficult to convince people, especially those afraid of spiders. Wolf spiders are very scary looking with:

  • Large and hairy bodies between ½ to 2 inches long

  • Grey with brown to dark grey markings

  • Large eyes

Another factor that can make wolf spiders intimidating is that they don’t use a web to catch prey; instead, they hunt for their food. Using their coloring as camouflage, these spiders stalk their prey at night. Instead of a web, they will dig or use tunnels made by other animals or live in vegetation.

While wolf spiders, like most other species, are shy and will keep their distance from people, they will bite if threatened. You should keep in mind that wolf spiders are often confused for the difficult to identify, brown recluse, which along with the black widow, are the two medically dangerous spiders in the country.

However, just because wolf spiders aren't dangerous doesn’t change the fact that no one wants these spiders living in their home. As a Maryland resident, you should know what you can do to keep them away.

Where Do Wolf Spiders Live?

You might have heard of house spiders, which are usually born inside your home and are unlikely to have ever been outside. Wolf spiders don’t fall under the category of house spiders because they prefer to remain outdoors.

As previously said, wolf spiders prefer burrows to live in instead of webs, although they still can create them. Because of their hunting habits, they are more suited to the outdoors.

Although wolf spiders prefer to be outside, they may find themselves inside by accident. They might wander in through an open door or window if they are stalking prey. If this does happen, you might find them in closets, behind or under furniture, behind doors, or in house plant containers. Essentially, they will look for a place that is dark and secluded from people.

If you have issues with wolf spiders on your Maryland property, you don’t have to sit by and let them live there. With the help of professionals, you can keep wolf spiders and their prey away.
